How Often Do You Need a Dental Check-Up?

Routine dental consultations are crucial in ensuring a healthy oral cavity. When you visit us for a dental check-up, we will conduct a thorough screening of your mouth, spot the onset of oral conditions, and treat them accordingly. Here is what’s included in a routine consultation. Here is what’s included in a routine consultation.

Oral Cleaning

Oral cleaning is a combination of two procedures, namely scaling and root planing (deep cleaning). Scaling is removing the plaque and tartar accumulations from the surface of the teeth, whereas root planing involves the same performed on the tooth roots. We use an ultrasonic scaling appliance for this purpose, which has a stainless steel tip that vibrates at ultrasonic frequencies. When this vibrating tip is brought close to the tartar deposits, they will be dislodged and washed away using a jet of water. Deep cleaning is often performed when you suffer from gum diseases, such as gingivitis or periodontitis.

Cavity Treatment

Cavities are mainly caused due to the tartar deposits adhered to the teeth. They release toxic substances as and when they feed on the food residues left in the mouth, which erode the enamel and decay the underlying dentin, which is softer than the enamel. We treat cavities by removing the decay thoroughly, scrubbing the walls of the cavity, and filling it using suitable filling material to restore its contour and strength. We often use tooth-colored fillings, such as dental-grade ceramic or composite resin, which are biocompatible and render excellent properties.

X-Rays

Dental x-rays enable us to get a better view of the underlying oral tissues, such as the jawbone or the tooth roots. X-rays also give us a more detailed view of the teeth when we wish to check the surface imperfections on them, such as cracks or chipping. If you want to get your teeth misalignment corrected using orthodontic solutions, x-rays would be helpful in oral imaging.

Preventive Treatment

As the name suggests, preventive treatment procedures are carried out to prevent common dental conditions even before they can take a toll on your oral health. Some of the common ones are dental sealants - used to cover the occlusal grooves on the molars and premolars to prevent cavities, fluoride treatment - used to strengthen the teeth by replenishing the volume of fluoride in them, etc.

How Often Is a Dental Check-Up Required?

Oral consultations would be required at least once every six months. Leaving the tartar deposits on the teeth for longer can lead to the onset of cavities. Also, any other treatment that you would require, such as restorations, cosmetic dental treatment, etc., will be addressed by the dentist during this visit.
