Foods to Eat for Better Oral Health

‘You are what you eat' - a popular saying that emphasizes the importance of the food we eat and its effect on our body. This is quite true in terms of oral health as well, as our diet is just as important as the way we maintain our oral hygiene. Here are some foods that help us maintain a healthier mouth and better oral health.

  • Dairy Products

Milk, cheese, yogurt, and other dairy products are very good for the teeth, mainly because they are rich sources of calcium. Additionally, they are low in sugar and contain an essential protein called casein. Casein strengthens the enamel and makes the teeth less susceptible to damage. Cheese, in particular, is rich in phosphate content, which helps to maintain the pH balance in the mouth and prevent damage due to acidic content.

  • Celery and Other Crunchy Veggies

Celery and vegetables are excellent for the teeth as they require a good amount of chewing, which indirectly cleans the teeth surfaces. The water present in the vegetables is a natural cleanser as it stimulates the production of saliva in the mouth, which helps to wash away the oral microbes. More importantly, they contain many vitamins and minerals that strengthen the teeth and are good for your overall health.

  • Fruits and Nuts

Fruits such as apples and pears increase salivation in the mouth, which neutralizes the acids in the mouth, such as citric and magic acids. It is best to consume fresh fruits rather than having their juices, as they may contain sugars that are not good for the teeth. Also, chewing them stimulates the gums and strengthens the teeth. On the other hand, nuts contain tons of vitamins and minerals, such as calcium, vitamin D, E, B6, magnesium, iron, potassium, zinc, etc. Including a small portion of nuts in your everyday diet  can help strengthen the teeth and provide the body the necessary elements.

  • Water

Water is often less recognized when it comes to maintaining healthier and strong teeth. The water we drink is enriched with fluoride, which is an essential mineral that increases the immunity of the teethConsuming a sufficient amount of water helps our entire body stay hydrated, maintain the health of our skin, remove the unwanted toxins from our system and muscular growth.

Apart from these, including meat, berries, leafy veggies, whole grains, roots, mushrooms, broccoli, etc., in the diet will help strengthen the teeth and maintain better oral health.
