I’m looking into tooth replacement options. I know dental implants are a better replacement than dentures, but I have metal sensitivities. I can’t even wear my wedding ring. Would I be better off with dentures in that case?
It is never better to get dentures to replace your teeth. You will find your quality of life go down significantly. Even the best fitting dentures reduce your eating capacity by 50%. But, that is not even close to the biggest problem which comes with dentures.
Your body recognizes you no longer have any roots of your teeth. Because of that, it assumes you no longer need your jawbone and starts to resorb the minerals in your jawbone. This is known as facial collapse. Eventurally, there won’t be enough jawbone left for you to even retain your dentures.
Implant Overdentures are Your Best Option
You can still get dental implants. You’ll just have to get metal-free dental implants. Not every dentist uses them yet so you may have to call around. Ask if they use zirconia implants.
Zirconia is known as ceramic steel. They’re as strong as the titanium implants but without the metal. In your place, I wouldn’t do a one to one ratio of teeth to implants. That would cost you a small fortune. If you happen to have a fortune, it would be like the mercedes of tooth replacements.
If you’re ike most of us and are working on a budget, implant overdentures are a more affordable option. It has the benefits of dental implants at tremendous cost savings.
Your dentist will place four to six dental implants and then anchor your dentures to them.
Advantages of Implant Overdentures
- Cost less than getting dental implants on each tooth
- Prevents facial collapse because of the prosthetic tooth roots
- Completely secures your dentures
- It’s like having healthy teeth again
